Qualified vs Ordinary Dividends Calculator

Short answer

Qualified dividends are taxed at 0/15/20% (capital-gains rates); ordinary dividends at your marginal bracket. At 24% vs 15%, every $10,000 of qualified dividends saves $900 in federal tax. Compare your brackets below.

Why two rates exist

Congress taxes qualified dividends at capital-gains rates to reward long-term corporate ownership: the company already paid corporate tax, and you held the shares (typically 60+ days around the ex-date). Payouts that do not meet the rules — most REIT distributions, MLP income, dividends on briefly held stock — fall back to ordinary rates, i.e. your marginal bracket.

Practical upshot for placement: keep qualified-pay dividend stocks in taxable accounts where the low rate applies, and shelter non-qualified payers (REITs especially) inside IRAs where the distinction vanishes. Your 1099-DIV Box 1a/1b split tells you where you stand each year.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a dividend qualified?

Generally: it is paid by a US corporation (or qualifying foreign corporation) and you held the stock more than 60 days during the 121-day period around the ex-dividend date. Most common-stock dividends you held long-term qualify; REIT payouts, MLPs, and short-hold dividends usually do not. Your 1099-DIV reports the split each year.

How big is the tax difference?

It depends on your brackets. At a 24% ordinary bracket with a 15% qualified rate, $10,000 of dividends costs $2,400 as ordinary but $1,500 as qualified — a $900 saving. The gap widens in higher brackets and shrinks in the 10–12% brackets, where ordinary rates are already low. Run your numbers above.

Can I turn ordinary dividends into qualified ones?

Not by relabeling — qualification follows the holding-period and payer rules. What you can do is hold dividend stocks long-term (clearing the 60-day rule), prefer common stock over REITs/MLPs in taxable accounts, and shelter non-qualified payers inside IRAs where the distinction does not matter.

Where do I find my qualified vs ordinary split?

Form 1099-DIV from your broker: Box 1a shows total ordinary dividends and Box 1b shows the qualified portion. Use last year’s split as the starting assumption for this year’s estimate above.

Is this tax advice?

No. This compares two rates you select — it does not determine whether your dividends actually qualify, and it ignores state tax and the NIIT unless you pick the rate that includes them. See the dividend tax calculators for fuller estimates and a tax professional for advice.
