Dividend Tax by State Calculator

Federal tax plus your state’s cut, in one estimate. Nine states take $0 — see what yours takes. Free, no signup.

Short answer

Total dividend tax = federal tax (qualified share at 0/15/20%, ordinary share at your bracket) + state tax (your marginal state rate; $0 in AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY). Enter your figures below.

How dividend tax stacks

Dividend tax has two layers. The federal layer splits your dividends: the qualified share is taxed at the capital-gains rates (0%, 15%, or 20%, chosen by income, plus 3.8% NIIT at high incomes) while the ordinary share — most REIT and short-hold payouts — is taxed at your marginal bracket. The state layer applies your state’s marginal rate on top, except in the nine states that do not tax dividends.

That stacking is why location matters: the same $10,000 of qualified dividends can cost roughly $1,500 federal-only in Texas and $1,500 plus several hundred more in a high-tax state. Run both to price a move — but confirm rates against current tables first, since states change them.

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no tax on dividends?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax dividends — the calculator presets their state rate to 0. New Hampshire repealed its Interest and Dividends Tax for tax periods beginning on or after January 1, 2025. Everywhere else, enter your marginal state rate on dividends.

How are qualified dividends taxed federally?

Qualified dividends use the capital-gains brackets — 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on taxable income — instead of your ordinary bracket. High earners can also owe the 3.8% net investment income tax. Ordinary (non-qualified) dividends, such as most REIT payouts, are taxed at your marginal income-tax bracket. Pick the rates that match your return in the calculator.

Why does the calculator ask for my marginal state rate instead of looking it up?

State brackets, exemptions, and local add-ons differ and change yearly — a stored table would go stale and mislead. The only rates we assert are the nine no-tax states above. For any other state, enter your marginal rate from your state’s current tax tables or last return.

Do I owe state tax if my broker is in another state?

Generally you owe tax where you live, not where your broker sits. Moving from a high-tax state to a no-tax state can cut the state slice to zero, which is exactly the comparison this calculator is built for — run your dividends at both rates.

Is this tax advice?

No. This is an estimate from rates you supply, not tax advice and not a substitute for the current IRS and state instructions. Brackets, NIIT thresholds, and state rules change — confirm with the current publications or a tax professional before filing or making decisions.
